Introduction
Lebanon is member of the GFCM since 14th of November 1960. The country is party to the UN Law of the Sea Convention (5 January 1995)) but not member of FAO Compliance Agreement of 1993. Lebanon has not ratified the FAO Port State Measures Agreement of 2009 and the UN Fish Stock Agreement of 1995.

Minimum sizes

The minimum size are regulated by the Resolution No. 15/1 of 2004 concerning the legal standards for fishing, transport, purchase and importation of fish, crustaceans, sea shells and conchs in Lebanon. Fishing, purchase, sale, transport and importation of fish, crustaceans, sea shells and conchs, with a size that does not meet the legal standards indicated in the attached list, is absolutely prohibited (art. 1). Fishing or importing fish, not mentioned in the attached list, with a length (size) of less than 15 cm, with the exception of the species which do not reach the aforementioned size with maturity age, is absolutely prohibited (art. 2).

Ban on catching whales, seals, and sea turtles: Decision 125/1, 23/9/1999
Ban on sponge collection: Decision 281/1, 19/11/1998
Decision 396/1 issued on 12/5/2014. Ban on catching seabirds.
Decision 1044/1 issued on 25/11/2014. General conditions to protect cetaceans/marine mammals (e.g. whales, dolphins and seals).
Decision 1045/1 issued on 25/11/2014. General conditions to fish sharks & rays.

Fishing gear and methods

The Resolution No. 346/1 organizing and determining marine fishing methods and fishing gear of 15 July 2010 regulates some fishing methods and fishing gear such as the use of netting for sardines (lux) and the fixed netting code. It also determines the fishing area and forbids the use of fishing gear from a distance of less than 500 m from a beach or a bay (except for “foot- fishing”). The Resolution allows the use of gun fishing without the use of diving machines.
